Let us understand first, what the word "Ayurveda" stands for. The word "Ayurveda' is originated from the Sanskrit language and is derived from two words ‚Äė‚ÄĚAyur‚ÄĚ and ‚ÄúVeda‚Äô‚ÄĚ. Ayur means life while Veda means science or knowledge. On a broader note, Ayurveda means "science of life." In Ayurveda, there is the prevailing belief that everything in life is connected to each other. So it becomes necessary to focus on our health and wellness in order to keep our mind, body and soul in balance.

 

In Ayurveda, it is believed that the human body is controlled by Life Processes "Doshas" that is Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Ayurveda techniques help us to balance our mind, body and soul and keep them inclined.  

 

Vatta is related to breathing and muscle movement. If it is in balance it fosters creativity and flexibility. Pitta governs our digestive system. Kapha sees our muscle strength and endurance. These Doshas play an important role in our body performance and maintenance. 

 

Even our environment plays an important role in creating a nurturing lifestyle that comprises elements ‚Äď fire, earth, water, space and air. These elements affect our harmony, system and our energy. Ayurveda helps us to grow holistically with the balance of mind, body & soul.

 

History & Evolution of Ayurveda  

The origin of Ayurveda dated back to 5,000 years ago and practiced in India since the 2nd century BC. It comprises mainly four Vedas: the Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sam Veda, and Atharva Veda. It is said that Ayurveda started its origin by the god of the creator- The Lord Brahma. It is believed that Brahma passed this knowledge of Ayurveda to the sages and then Ayurveda took its form.

 

Ayurveda is called the ‚Äúmother of healing sciences‚ÄĚ and has in-depth information about the herbs and medicines in form of Shlokas or hymns. These entire have a huge influence on our internal and external well-being. It is an ailment to our diseases. It comprises profound wisdom that teaches us how to lead a balanced life.

 

Branches of Ayurveda

There are eight different components in Ayurvedic medicine that helps in managing our overall body and health. These branches of Ayurveda helps us in taking care of our body holistically:

 

1. Kaya Chikitsa

  • This branch includes the overall treatment of the entire body.¬†
  • It mainly caters to the problems related to the digestive system and metabolism.¬†
  • It may include practices like applying oils, lotions, and creams.

 

2. Baala Chikitsa

  • It focuses on diseases and sicknesses that occurred in children.¬†

 

3. Graha Chikitsa

  • This branch basically deals with problems revolving around the mind.¬†
  • Some of the treatments¬†include herbs, diet, yoga, deep breathing, and chanting mantras.

 

4. Urdhyaanga Chikitsa

  • This branch is primarily concerned with the health issues of the upper part of the body which mainly includes the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.

 

5. Shalyaroga Chikitsa

  • It includes surgical processes.¬†

 

6. Damstra Chikitsa

  • This branch involves removing toxins and poisons from the body, food, and environment.

 

7. Jara Chikitsa (geriatric)

  • It focuses on the treatment of diseases that occurs in old age.
  • It includes various therapies which help in improving memory, strength and longevity.

 

8. Vajjikaran Chikitsa (reproductive health)

  • It involves sexual health and reproductive problems.

 

Ayurveda Process of Healing 

The ayurvedic process involves ‚Äúliving simplified‚ÄĚ in general. It takes us to ancient living where the prevalence of junk food and chaos lifestyle was less and more of a simple lifestyle was followed.
